G643AAB-1Been looking for a top quality monitoring system, but don't want to shell out big bucks for the privilege? Event Electronics, sister company of RØDE, has a solution.

Version 3 of the Event 20/20BAS speakers - dubbed "Big Ass Sound" - is based on their flagship Opals. They take all the best bits like high power handling and low distortion, but keep the price pleasingly low, which makes them a very attractive prospect for a range of usages and budgets.

The strong and clear bass makes this speaker ideal for those working in bass-heavy electronic music. Having said that, thanks to the very good frequency response at low levels, the 20/20BAS is also perfect for post, sound design and education users.

The Event 20/20BAS speakers also have impressive safety features and durability (believe me - these suckers are built to last!). A very big point for education, as well as commercial use, is the built-in protection circuits shielding the speaker from blown drivers and thermal damage. If you need to run the 20/20BASs at very loud levels for a long time and the input gain is too heavy, then the input stage is switched off to protect them. And say you're working in an environment which may not be properly air conditioned, they will detect that too. This not only protects your investment, but also staff and students against electrical faults.

So how does it actually sound?

RØDE's International Sales Manager Ben Sweeney was recently in the country, he dropped in for a chat at Jigsaw HQ, and brought the Event 20/20 BAS monitors along with him for us to try out in our demo room (see the video below for a rundown. When the volume was turned right down, I was impressed to hear none of the frequencies were lost - usually the bass is the first thing to go but it was all there, still sitting nicely in the mix.

- You can see more details from Ben in the video below.
